Basic Qigong Protocol - Qi

太極拳 Tai Chi Chuan is a style of Chinese Boxing using Tai Chi Theory applied as a Yinyang strategy. The techniques come from Changquan 长拳 – Northern Long Fist Boxing and the work of a previous General, Qi Jiguang. Its yin aspect for training, “slow, soft and steady” is what made it a popular form of therapeutic exercise. Its Yang aspect for fighting; “fast, hard, and spontaneous” is very similar to other martial arts. Internal Function generates external Form.

The energy behind Tai Chi Chuan comes from the study and practice of Qigong. Qi, simply defined is the Life Force that keeps us alive. A person who has died has no Qi. Healthy, abundant Qi flows unrestricted throughout the body, along a system of pathways in the fascia called Meridians. These meridians are connected to the organs that generate metabolism. Sickness and illness is a result of internal Qi stagnation and unbalanced Qi levels.

Qi is a very general term. Study and research into TCM – Traditional Chinese Medicine will reveal the complexity of the human body and the various forms of Qi in the body. In a basic practice of Qigong three manifestations of energy: Jing, Qi, Shen are studied and practiced to cultivated and harmonize them together. This is accomplished using physical movement (external sensation), breathing (internal feeling), and mental concentration (consciousness) and imagery that moves Qi throughout the whole body.

As movements become Zhaoshou (familiarity with techniques) 着熟, we become more Qi sensitive and develop Ting Jin (Listening Energy) 听劲; the ability to feel the sensations in our body accurately. We can then “distinguish substantial from insubstantial” gaining Dong Jin (Comprehending / Understanding Energy) 劲懂. Finally, with great determination and effort, the years of practice yield Shenming (Deity – highest level, incredible Skills) 神明.
